The Business Solutions Company of Sharp Corporation, whose main products are Office Solutions (Multi-Function Devices -MFD) and Visual Solutions (Interactive White Boards and Professional Display Panels) continues expanding its operations, specifically in Asia Pacific and the Middle East.
Due to the expansion, in 2016, Sharp’s regional organization Business Solution Centre – Asia, decided to give the business an additional boost by focusing on human capital development. The team started to look into incorporating e-learning tools with the aim of disseminating critical business information, and train employees to improve the quality of its customer service, in order to meet customer expectations and improve brand value in the region.
As a result, Sharp came up with the initiative of introducing online training programs so that both technical and commercial staff could fine-tune their knowledge, boost their skills, and become the best representatives of the brand.
The biggest challenge was in reaching the thousands of employees spread across the Asia Pacific and the Middle East regions, not all of whom speak English. Another challenge was on how to get staff from different cultures to connect to the same knowledge inherent to the Business Solution Company products, as well as how to measure participants’ knowledge and be certain they acquired the skills expected of them.
That’s when the Blackboard Open LMS came in. This learning management system covers everything at once: practicality, intuitive design, usability, flexibility and, above all, peer collaboration enablement.
When Sharp began creating content, they prioritized the clear objective of reaching as many employees as quickly as possible through information blocks that could also be used to corroborate previously acquired knowledge and, at the same time, do practical exercises. According to Raul Pastorfide, assistant marketing manager for the Business Solutions Centre- Asia, whose team handles e-learning content, ”The ELearning Site is run pretty much like a school. These courses are offered every 15 days to all registered members. All participants are encouraged to complete the said course and examinations on those stipulated dates. This process has created a sense of urgency and importance.”
For the moment, they have started out with Technical Training for Office Solutions, which comprises Multifunction Devices (MFP’s) targeted aimed for their service engineers. They are now in the process of expanding their academic portfolio to include courses for their sales team. Very soon, they will start developing courses that will cater to Visual Solutions, which comprises Interactive White Boards and Professional Display Panels.
Currently, all courses are written and administered in English. But there are plans to expand it into languages that support the region.
So far, the response has been extremely positive. Among the immediate positive effects is that employees who have taken the courses have become more confident in themselves and in their abilities, which is fundamental to achieving any company objective. Customer interaction has been more formal and informed, which has been clearly reflected in service calls results. Lastly, they are able to steadily meet customer expectations — essential in sustaining the growth of the Business Solutions Company in the region.
