Chris Kenniburg from Dearborn schools has shared a database preset with whole Moodle community which uses JavaScript and CSS to create the flashcards experience for students using the database activity in core Moodle.
The database preset will allows you to add Pictures, videos and text on the front and back of the flashcard. You can also customize the look and feel of the preset through the CSS template of the preset.

You can download the preset from this link and use it any of your Moodle course to create flashcards for your students without any plugin or external service. The preset is released under Creative Commons license and will works on all Moodle versions from 2.2 onwards.
